ilan-grapelEgypt wants Israel to free 78 Egyptian prisoners in exchange for Ilan Grapel, an Israeli-American national accused of spying and held by Cairo since June.

The demand was presented during US Defense Secretary Leon Panetta’s visit to Cairo, according to al-Ahram, a newspaper associated with the Egyptian government. In addition, Egypt wants Israel to release three Egyptian minors currently held at the Beer Sheva prison.

The Egyptian paper reported that Cairo made other demands that are currently being examined by Jerusalem and Washington. If the conditions are accepted, Israel and Egypt are expected to launch direct talks aimed at closing the deal.

According to the report, Panetta submitted an official request to free Garpel during the Cairo visit.

On Friday, al-Ahram quoted sources in Egypt as saying that finalizing a deal to free Garpel is a “matter of time” as result of the “weak evidence against him.”

  1. make this deal with them & give them the encouragement to capture more soldiers & spies until they tell them to free terrorists from hamas.

  2. What was he doing in Egypt? Not a lot of brainpower there.

Maybe the Americans can get him out. The Israelis can’t seem to negotiate anything unless a land giveaway is involved. I guess we can’t really call that a negotiation since they just give away land and terrorists and never get anything but more terrorism in return.

“Egypt wants Israel to free 78 Egyptian prisoners in exchange for Ilan Grapel…”

“In addition, Egypt wants Israel to release three Egyptian minors currently held at the Beer Sheva prison.”

    78 + 3 = 81

  4. Have in mind when you say matir assurim, among all other people falsely and/or dangerously imprisoned. And along with the people imprisoned by their smallness of heart and mind.
