An Egyptian intelligence delegation arrived in the Gaza Strip on Tuesday for talks with Hamas in a bid to stave off escalating violence between Israel and the militant group.

Ahmad Abdelhaliq, who is heading up the Palestinian portfolio for the Egyptian mission, entered Gaza through the Erez crossing and was greeted by the head of Hamas security forces, Tawfuk Abu Naim. He reportedly met with senior Hamas figures including Ismail Haniyeh and Yahya Sinwar.

The groundwork is set to be laid ahead of the Egyptian General Intelligence Services chief Abbas Kamel’s visit scheduled for Thursday. According to Haaretz, Kamal will also go visit Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas in the West Bank city of Ramallah where the two are expected to discuss internal Palestinian reconciliation and the true with Israel.
