The crisis at El Al Airlines has concluded, both the Histadrut (General Federation of Labor in Israel) and the carrier’s management have confirmed, Globes Israel reports.

Histadrut chairman Avi Nissenkorn said that after talks through the night, El Al’s management and pilots reached agreement and worded a memorandum of understanding on the issues that had been in dispute.

El Al’s management and pilots had signed a new employment agreement in December, which ended a round of sanctions back then. But, Globes Israel reports, earlier this month a dispute broke out over the role, status and pay of pilots aged 65-67 who are unable to fly passenger jets because they are over 65 but are below the Israeli legal retirement age of 67. As result the pilots again took industrial action and many flights were canceled. The matter went to the Labor Court, where the sides were ordered to conduct intensive negotiations to swiftly resolve the dispute.

It has been agreed that the pilots aged 65-67 will continue to receive a basic salary of NIS 50,000 per month and conduct 10 training sessions each month for an additional fee of NIS 1,000-1,100 per session. Read more at Globes Israel.

  1. I don’t understand what the big deal of always taking El Al when flying to Israel. With all their lateness and rudeness to their costumers why would you still want to fly with them? They are not cheap either. It reminds me of people who still insist on voting only for Democrats. When they came after the war, they were brainwashed that the Democrats were good and that they tried to save as many Yidden as possible and all Republicans are evil just like the Nazi’s. Till today, these survivors will only vote Democrat no matter what. They fail to realize that times have changed. It’s the same with El Al. We were brainwashed years ago that only El Al is safe and any other airline will definitely be hijacked and everyone will be killed. Times have changed. News alert: It is now safe to fly other airlines. You will save a lot of money in the process, come on time, and be treated like a mensch at the same time. Whats not to like about that?

  2. i think comment #1 says it all and i totally agree. furthermore, i don’t believe for one second that “the crisis is over” as your headline screams out. they (el-al) are only telling you that so as not to scare away customers and to bring back those that have already been scared away. they’re not stupid. why would anyone want to fly el al with the risk of their flight being cancelled or delayed at the last minute? el al knows this and they are simply doing ‘damage control’.
