El Al, Israel’s national airline, reportedly decided Wednesday to place 3,300 employees – including 550 out of its 650 pilots – on unpaid leave.
The airline continues to feel deep economic pressure as the fallout from coronavirus maintains its bite. This latest decision comes on the heels of the Israeli government’s announcement that all arrivals from abroad – whether visitors or residents – will be required to enter a 14-day self-imposed quarantine. Several leading foreign airlines have canceled routes to Israel and Israeli airlines have similarly closed international routes.
El Al released a statement last week, which revealed that it would lay off around 1,000 of its staff, as well as senior executives – directors and management – agreeing to take a 20% wage cut. It is now thought that 4,500-5,000 of El Al’s 6,400 staff will be asked to take unpaid leave.
