Election Day: Storobin vs. Fidler

storobin-fidlerMatzav.com Election Coverage: A nasty, brutish and short campaign for the state Senate comes to a close today as voters go to the polls in a special election to fill the seat of Carl Kruger, a Democrat who resigned in December after pleading guilty to taking bribes.

The race between Democratic City Councilman Lew Fidler and Republican lawyer David Storobin seems to fit a common quip about political arguments on college campuses: they are so nasty because the stakes are so low.

The district the two men are running to represent is being divided up in the decennial redistricting process and won’t exist come the general election in November.

At one point earlier this year, Mr. Fidler said Mr. Storobin had ties to neo-Nazis. (He later apologized.) Mr. Storobin later ran an advertisement questioning his opponents commitment to Orthodox Jews by pointing out that Mr. Fidler once called himself a “bacon and eggs kind of Jew.”

And in their only debate, held last week on New York 1’s Inside City Hall, the two men spent much of the time arguing over who had run a more negative campaign.

A win could provide a springboard for either man to run in a neighboring district, like a new heavily Orthodox Jewish seat being created in Midwood and Borough Park. That district doesn’t have an incumbent state senator.

The race could also provide a window into shifting political allegiances in the area, which contains large contingents of Russian Jews. Much of the campaign has played out in Russian-language media.

Those voters are starting to turn out in larger and larger numbers, and have started to back Republicans-something that could help the party keep its tenuous hold on the state Senate. They helped Republican businessman Robert Turner win a surprise victory in a special election to fill the congressional seat vacated by Anthony Weiner when he resigned last year.

A win by Mr. Storobin would also widen-for a few months, anyway-Senate Republicans’ grip on power, giving them a 33-29 majority.

  1. Don’t we deserve a quality representative? The nasty, personally negative campaign along with the lies a d inuendos turned me off: BIG TIME.

  2. The choice is clear! Daas Torah endorses David Storobin. A “few” Baalei Baatim & “Frumah” marketers endorse Fidler. Btw, notice to you promo marketers: We will not forget the Chillul Hashem you caused with Fidler & Weprin! You are no longer welcome in our Yeshiva! You know who you are! Shame on you! You sold out your Neshama for a few measly dollars! We won’t forget!

  3. R’ Belsky, R’ Avrohom Schorr, R’ Moshe Meir Weiss, and R’ Zechriah Wallerstein all said that you must vote against the pro-toeva candidate at all costs. These Rabbonim don’t support any candidates ever, they all said that society can not allow immoral people be their voices in government.
