Elon Musk made an explosive claim early Monday, alleging that the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) had transferred an astounding $59 million “last week to luxury hotels in New York City to house illegal migrants.”
In a post on X, the world’s wealthiest individual stated that his Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) had “just discovered” these emergency funds being used in this manner, despite President Trump’s ongoing calls for a thorough overhaul of FEMA, which could potentially lead to the agency’s closure.
“Sending this money violated the law and is in gross insubordination to the President’s executive order,” Musk wrote.
He further criticized FEMA, stating, “That money is meant for American disaster relief and instead is being spent on high-end hotels for illegals,” highlighting his role in leading the initiative to reduce government waste.
“A clawback demand will be made today to recoup those funds,” Musk added, signaling his intent to recover the misallocated money.
In response to concerns about FEMA, last month Trump issued an executive order to establish a council that would review the agency, citing “serious concerns of political bias” within its operations.
The 47th president mandated that the council convene within 90 days and deliver its findings within 180 days from that initial meeting.
Just days before, Trump, 78, had appeared with survivors of Hurricane Helene who were still displaced four months after the storm, where he proposed the idea of completely restructuring FEMA.
The president sharply criticized FEMA’s performance, asserting that it was “not on the ball … and we’re going to turn it all around.”
He then told a group of federal and local officials that he would be “signing an executive order to begin the process of fundamentally reforming and overhauling FEMA — or maybe getting rid of FEMA. I think, frankly, that FEMA’s not good.”
Staying true to his commitment, Trump followed through on his remarks.
Additionally, he accused FEMA, the agency tasked with delivering emergency aid to disaster-stricken areas, of mishandling relief efforts and suggested that US states should receive direct federal support in the aftermath of disasters.
Over the past few years, FEMA’s funding has significantly increased due to several major weather-related disasters across the country.
