Elon Musk’s latest venture in the field of artificial intelligence (AI), known as xAI, has made its debut through a newly launched website, accessible at https://x.ai/. Musk himself announced the company’s purpose as “understanding reality,” although no further details or explanations were provided.

“The goal of xAI is to understand the true nature of the universe,” according to the website.

The team behind xAI is led by Elon Musk and comprises individuals with previous experience at renowned AI entities such as OpenAI, Google Research, Microsoft Research, and DeepMind (which was recently integrated into Google). Aside from Musk, the website introduces Igor Babuschkin, Manuel Kroiss, Yuhuai (Tony) Wu, Christian Szegedy, Jimmy Ba, Toby Pohlen, Ross Nordeen, Kyle Kosic, Greg Yang, Guodong Zhang, and Zihang Dai as part of the team. Currently, xAI receives guidance from Dan Hendrycks, a researcher who heads the Center for AI Safety, a nonprofit organization dedicated to mitigating AI-related risks on a societal scale.

According to the website, the @xAI team plans to hold a discussion on Twitter Spaces on July 14th, allowing listeners to engage with the team and ask questions. However, the specific time for the event has not been specified. While xAI is described as a separate entity from Musk’s overarching X Corp, it will maintain close collaboration with X (Twitter), Tesla, and other companies. Musk recently implemented temporary limitations on his Twitter usage, attributing the change to AI startups scraping data for large language models (LLMs).

News of xAI initially surfaced in April, when filings revealed that Musk had established the company in Nevada. During that period, Musk was listed as the director, while Jared Birchall, director of Musk’s family office, served as the secretary. Limited information was available about xAI at that time, although reports indicated that Musk sought funding from SpaceX and Tesla to initiate the project.

Musk has previous involvement in a prominent AI organization, having co-founded OpenAI in 2015. However, he disassociated himself from it in 2018 to avoid potential conflicts of interest with Tesla, which is also extensively engaged in the AI field. Since then, Musk has publicly criticized OpenAI and mentioned his efforts in developing something called “TruthGPT” during an interview with Tucker Carlson.
