Douglas Emhoff, the Jewish husband of U.S. Vice President Kamala Harris whom the Biden administration often tasks with representing it at Jewish events, is being mocked on social media for a post that confused the story of Chanukah.

“The story of Chanukah and the story of the Jewish people has always been one of hope and resilience. In the Chanukah story, the Jewish people were forced into hiding. No one thought they would survive or that the few drops of oil they had would last,” Emhoff claimed. “But they survived and the oil kept burning.”

“During those eight days in hiding, they recited their prayers and continued their traditions,” Emhoff added. “That’s why Chanukah means dedication. It was during those dark nights that the Maccabees dedicated themselves to maintaining hope and faith in the oil, each other and their Judaism.”

“In these dark times, I think of that story,” Emhoff added.

The Chanukah story is not about Jews hiding for eight days with a little bit of oil. It is about the Jews, having won a military victory, rededicating the Bais Hamikdosh and finding only a small amount of oil—enough for one day—which then miraculously lasted for eight.

“Um this is definitely not the story of Chanukah,” wrote an attorney, who has a large following and uses the pseudonym A. G. Hamilton.

“How could this have happened?” wrote Noah Rothman, a National Reveiw senior writer.

“I’m really hoping the second gentleman left this to some hapless and uneducated intern, who couldn’t be bothered to even consult Wikipedia. Eight days of hiding? Yikes, man,” wrote Jason Bedrick, a research fellow in the Heritage Foundation’s Center for Education Policy.

“How to say ‘I don’t anything about Judaism’ without saying ‘I don’t know anything about Judaism,’” wrote another user, Olia Klein. “This level of ignorance is embarrassing.”

  1. Better to remain silent and be thought a fool than to speak and remove all doubt. (Attributed to Abraham Lincoln)

It’s so sad that when people of ignorance are thrust into celebrity positions, they feel obligated to appear knowledgeable. It’s always humorous.

    • Stop picking on him. 90% of American Jews have no idea of Chanukah. They light up the candle and do nothing else. Mr Em is helping the Jews people. Many rabbis endorse him and admire his courage. Maybe you should do something for klall yisrel.
      Boo hoo belly acher.

  2. Her “version” of חנוכה is a million times closer to Judaism than the פארשאלטענע “version” of the ציונים. The reason why everyone is attacking her is because she said that the war and מסירת נפש of חנוכה was for Yiddishkeit and for the oil and the עבודה and she doesn’t “know” the Zionist version להבדיל. She could have said more clearly that the lasting of the oil was a merical but that’s obviously not the part the שקצים are attacking her for. Does anyone really think that these ציונים care that yidden should know the Torah and they shouldn’t be עם ארצים.

    • You’re an anti semite of the worst kind. May have a missah meshunah like you wish upon all Yidden in Eretz Yisroel, like Hitler and all Gentiles. Yimach Shimchah V’zichrech B’karov together with all nk and other sonei yisroel.

      • Where is your אהבת ישראל don’t you have a מבצע specially for that. Or does that not apply here for some reason? ודל

    • What on earth do your beliefs about Zionist have to do with this story? Why does everything have revolve around Zionism and be thought about in the context of your beliefs about Zionism by people like you?

    • Her version of chanukah??You have no idea what you’re talking about. It was HE, who is supposedly a yid. Mesiras nefesh!??. He is married to a goy! His version is correct ???!!!!

      • Your right that he fray and he is a huge עם הארץ and I didn’t say his “version” is correct and I did say he should of said it was a merical and he should also keep Shabbos etc but why do you think all those secular people and ציונים where attacking him I could assure you it wasn’t for his lack of אמונה it was for the tiny bit of אמונה he still has and for going against their whole made up ideas of what חנוכה is aka to make an independent country and to have a nationality and he doesn’t know anything about that so they where inraged.

  3. Nebech.
Otoh the world went after the macabbees for their war crimes and refused to ceasefire when they started winning. As long as they were losing no ceasefire needed

  4. He’s s shaygitz married to a shiksa. What can we expect. He clearly knows NOTHING WHATEVER about Yiddishkeit as he married a shiksa.

  5. Doug is a gigantic expert on Chanukah, after all, he was honored by the Habad to light their National Lubavitcher menorah in Washington just last week.

  6. Not really.confused at all (or that much). He simply made one story out of two. The Yidden DID hide in order to be able to continue learning Torah (but not for merely eight days). And the oil DID last for eight days, but not in their caves.

  7. No one ever thought Emhoff knew anything about or cared anything about Judaism. Nor did he ever claim to. No need to mock him when he wasn’t acting openly hostile. We have enough enemies already. Just correct him and move on.

  8. What makes this even more embarrassing is that back in 2020 Emhoff and Harris made a “warm and fuzzy” video about how they loved Chanukah and they were roundly mocked for not knowing what it was actually about. Here’s the link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r8hiixVLF-8
It’s incredible that they just botched it even worse.

Next up: Passover is when Jews celebrate the invention of the matzoball.
