The U.K. has reached a “perilous turning point” in the coronavirus pandemic, Prime Minister Boris Johnson warned on Tuesday, as Europe struggles with a resurgence of the virus.
“We always knew that while we might have driven the virus into retreat, the prospect of a second wave was real,” Johnson said. “I’m sorry to say that, as in Spain and France and many other countries, we’ve reached a perilous turning point.”
Johnson announced new restrictions in England to curb the spread of the virus that he said could last as long as six months. The measures include working from home when possible, a 10 p.m. closing time for pubs and restaurants and increased fines for breaking laws on gatherings and mask use.
