New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie campaigned aggressively for Mitt Romney in Iowa, where the Republican presidential hopeful won the caucuses on Tuesday.

So, Christie learned about the landscape in the state that traditionally votes first, and that could come in handy if Christie chooses to run for president in the future.

Larry Sabato at the University of Virginia says if Romney isn’t the next president, Christie has helped himself.

“The fact that Christie has been through Iowa and has met a lot of Iowa activists and no doubt has got an aide collecting business cards. All that’s going to help him in 2016,” Sabato told WCBS 880 reporter Peter Haskell.

James McCormick at Iowa State agrees.

“I think it gives him a credential that he takes Iowa seriously,” said McCormick.

Some still believe Christie might still be a good pick for vice president even though he said on Wednesday it’s unlikely that he’d be on Romney’s ticket.

“But, you don’t say no to something that hasn’t been offered,” the governor added.

Romney was declared the winner early Wednesday in Iowa by just eight votes. He was nearly tied with Rick Santorum.

Last-place finisher Michelle Bachmann decided to end her presidential campaign following her loss.
Texas Gov. Rick Perry also took a hit in the caucuses and was heading back home to think things over.

Ron Paul came in third, followed by Newt Gingrinch.

Following the win, Christie said he’s confident the Republican Party will choose Romney as its presidential nominee.

“The guy who was supposed to win did win,” Christie said. “He’s going to be the nominee of the Republican Party. I don’t know how long it will take, but he’ll get there.”

Christie gave credit to Santorum, saying he ran a credible campaign in Iowa, but said he’s not the best qualified GOP candidate.

Christie may campaign again with Romney in New Hampshire ahead of Tuesday’s primary.
