Addressing the North Carolina Republican Party Convention as part of his nationwide tour to officially announce his candidacy for the 2024 presidential race, Pence reiterated his criticism of Trump’s request for his assistance in overturning the 2020 election. Pence emphasized that on January 6, 2021, when Trump urged him to reject the electoral votes that had elected President Joe Biden, he was faced with a choice between Trump and the Constitution. Pence stated that he made the decision to prioritize the Constitution over Trump’s demands.
In a pointed remark aimed at Trump, Pence asserted to the North Carolina Republicans, “Anyone who prioritizes their personal interests over the Constitution should never hold the office of the President of the United States.”

The change in name had been part of a nationwide initiative aimed at removing names associated with Confederate Civil War generals, including Braxton Bragg, from military facilities.
