The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has reportedly instituted restrictions on the use of drones across various locations in New Jersey, effective until January 17.
According to ABC News, only those drone operators who have secured specific government authorization for “special security reasons” will be permitted to operate within these restricted zones.
The FAA’s Notice to Airmen (NOTAM) indicates that the government reserves the right to employ “deadly force” against drones if they present an “imminent security threat.”
On Wednesday, President Joe Biden addressed the recent wave of unexplained drone activity on the East Coast, reassuring the public that there is “no sense of danger” for Americans.
This marks Biden’s first public comment on the issue, which has captured attention since drones began appearing in the skies over New Jersey and neighboring states in mid-November, sparking concern among residents and fueling online speculation.
Meanwhile, U.S. military authorities have confirmed sightings of drones near and over military bases located in the United Kingdom and Germany.
Last week, President-elect Donald Trump suggested that the federal government should either provide clarity to the public about these incidents or take action to eliminate the drones.
The FAA’s updated guidelines stipulate that uncrewed aircraft systems are prohibited from operating within one nautical mile of the designated airspace outlined in the NOTAM, extending from ground level up to 400 feet. ABC News notes that recreational drones are typically allowed to fly up to 400 feet under existing FAA regulations.
This latest FAA restriction comes shortly after Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., was prevented on Wednesday from advancing legislation that would grant local law enforcement the authority to monitor aerial drones, according to The Associated Press.
