Christopher Wray, the outgoing head of the FBI, announced Sunday that he would step down once President-elect Donald Trump takes office. He made this decision to prevent the bureau from becoming further embroiled in the political turmoil surrounding its actions, particularly the 2022 search of Trump’s Mar-a-Lago estate.
In a comprehensive interview on CBS’s “60 Minutes,” Wray, 58, spoke about his upcoming resignation, the controversial raid on the Florida estate, and the significant threat posed by China to the United States.
Wray described his decision to resign before the completion of his 10-year term as “one of the hardest decisions” he has ever had to make. He shared this decision last month and elaborated on his reasoning during the interview.
“I care deeply, deeply — about the FBI, about our mission — and in particular about our people. But you know the president-elect had made clear that he intended to make a change, and the law is that that is something he is able to do for any reason or no reason at all,” Wray told Scott Pelley.
“My conclusion was that the thing that was best for the bureau was to try to do this in an orderly way, to not thrust the FBI deeper into the fray.”
Although Trump initially appointed Wray to lead the FBI during his first term, tensions between the two escalated following the FBI’s 2022 raid of Mar-a-Lago, where agents searched for classified documents that Trump was accused of mishandling.
Wray, who had led the agency for over seven years, also faced criticism during the FBI’s investigation into alleged efforts to undermine the results of the 2020 election. Trump, facing federal charges from a special prosecutor, saw both cases dropped after his victory in the 2020 election.
Wray defended his agency, asserting that the FBI’s role is to “follow the facts wherever they lead, no matter who likes it.” He explained that the raid on Trump’s estate was considered a last resort.
“And when we learn that information, classified material, is not being properly stored, we have a duty to act. And I can tell you that in investigations like this one, a search warrant is not and here was not anybody’s first choice,” he said on CBS.
Regarding any potential investigations into Trump by the Biden administration, Wray clarified that he had not discussed such matters with anyone in the White House and was confident that no one else at the FBI had either.
Wray also offered his support for the FBI’s investigation into Hunter Biden, President Biden’s son, who had been convicted of tax and gun charges before receiving a pardon from his father last month. The Biden administration has claimed that the prosecution was politically motivated.
“This is a hard job,” Wray commented. “You’re inevitably going to make different people angry, often very powerful people.”
The FBI director further emphasized the increasing security threat posed by the Chinese government, particularly its extensive cyber operations, which have stolen sensitive data from both individuals and corporations in the U.S. He also highlighted China’s efforts to target essential U.S. infrastructure.
“Things like water treatment plants. We’re talking about transportation systems,” he said. “We’re talking about targeting of our energy sector, the electric grid, natural gas pipelines. And recently we’ve seen targeting of our telecommunications systems.”
These challenges, including those posed by China, may be passed on to Kash Patel, a former attorney in the U.S. Justice Department’s national security division, whom Trump has nominated to head the FBI. Patel’s appointment will require Senate confirmation.

Chris Wray is one of the leaders of the deep deep deep state. A filthy vile creature. Hopefully he’ll get what’s coming to him really soon.
Cris Wray has “resigned” a while ago during the draining of the swamp.
