At the IDF’s satellite unit, the satellites are operated by mostly female 19-year-old soldiers.
“We search for creative nerds with extra credit in mathematics, physics, computer studies but also theater, arts and dance,” says Captain S., 32. “Technology is not the only criteria. We need people who can problem-solve because we often encounter situations that require real-time, sensible decision-making to prioritize satellite missions,” she says.
“Some of our work here is not just to retrieve information for intelligence purposes but also to ensure the longevity of the satellite. Our babies are each worth upwards of $100 million and we must be attuned to their problems so that we can solve them remotely.”
Israel’s six operational satellites are a main tool in Israel’s intelligence-gathering.
Operations in Syria, Iraq, the Red Sea, Africa, and Iran could not be carried out without a constant flow of intelligence made possible by satellites.
The newest satellite, Ofek 16, launched in July 2020, became operational in recent weeks and has begun providing better quality images than any of its predecessors.

  1. Nothing wrong actually in the pics. Not that we should be studying them. It is so heartwarming and inspiring to see kids this age who are capable and caring, so unlike the rest of the world and what they care and do not care about. The torah world should realize that they are so close to kiruv if anyone is.

  2. Listen, for now there are being drafted and the mood is more, not less. Hardly ideal for a Jewish army but it is what it is. That being said, this is actually a great place for them, mostly female company, and they’re probably better suited than male soldiers, due to their greater ability to multi-task (נשים דעתם קלות means that they can be on top of the many aspects of mothering and running a household simultaneously).

  3. This *can* be made to work, but the “woke” IDF morons-in-charge are pushing women into the combat units as well.

  4. ‘Nice’ how some of you ‘Guys’ berate women! You seem to forget, when things came “push to shove’ between Avrohom & Sorah, G-D admonished Avrohom; namely, “…..all that Sorah tells you listen to her”; Genesis, 21:12.
For the ‘Learners’: G-D used the word “SHEMA”. A word that connotes ‘Prophesy’. See Deuteronomy, 32:1; & Isaiah, 1:2; & commentaries.
    So; enough with childish sarcasm!
