Rav Menachem Pearl, Chief Rabbi of the Israeli Fire and Rescue Authority, recently handed in his resignation due to the authority’s failure to support firefighters’ religious rights. He complained of ongoing disregard for religious affairs, harming of religious and traditional firefighters, non-cooperation in Shabbos observance at fire stations and of a sweeping prohibition against growing beards even when this does not interfere with professional duties. Newly appointed Fire and Rescue Commissioner Dedi Simchi refused to even meet him.

Ashkenazi Chief Rabbi Rav Dovid Lau supported the resignation, writing, “Why do all the bodies in Israel responsible for the security of the state and public operate within the framework of the law with firefighting and rescue services being the only exception?”
