Israel’s Defense Ministry has advanced plans for over 2,600 West Bank housing units. These include 102 homes for the Amona exiles near Shiloh.
Amichai, where they will settle, is the first new West Bank settlement to be approved in twenty-five years since former Prime Minister Yitzchak Rabin froze building of new settlements in 1992.
“The decision today to found the town of Amichai is nothing less than historical,” said Amona representative Avichai Boaran. “After dozens of years during which not a single new town was built in Yehuda and Shomron, we are returning to our Zionist ethos.”
The defense ministry included 562 units in communities outside the main settlement blocs including Nokdim and Recheilim. 1,323 of 2,600 buildings received final approval and should soon be under construction.
Israel also announced the approval of three hundred new homes in Beit El and thirty-one in Chevron.A planning committee is expected to approve the construction of 176 new homes in East Yerushalayim’s Jabel Mukaber neighborhood. This will triple the size of the Jewish Nof Tzion enclave, which already has 91 apartments in seven buildings.
The European Union and France condemned the plans, arguing that Jewish West Bank construction damages peace negotiations and contravenes international law.
The White House also scolded Israel, saying in a statement: “President Trump has publicly and privately expressed his concerns regarding settlements and the Administration has made clear that unrestrained settlement activity does not advance the prospect for peace. At the same time the Administration recognizes that past demands for a settlement freeze have not helped advance peace talks.”
