Despite the unusual red hue that has appeared in the Sea of Galilee, Israel’s Water Ministry announced on Monday that the lake remains completely safe for swimming.

According to the ministry, the red patches are caused by the presence of a green algae species known as Botryococcus braunii.

This particular algae has appeared in the lake during previous warm seasons, coinciding with peak swimming periods. The ministry explained that the algae produce a natural pigment when exposed to intense sunlight, which results in the reddish tint seen on the water’s surface.

Officials emphasized that the pigment is harmless. Laboratory analyses conducted at the Sea of Galilee confirmed that the water poses no health risk to bathers.

The ministry also noted that no cases of allergic reactions have ever been linked to the phenomenon.

To ensure the continued safety of the water for all recreational and national uses, the Water Authority is maintaining regular monitoring of both water quality and the lake’s ecological conditions.
