In 2020, President Biden seized the opportunity to criticize then-President Donald Trump for his awkward descent down a ramp during a commencement speech. Those remarks, however, came back to haunt President Biden on Thursday when he himself stumbled over a sandbag at a commencement ceremony held at the U.S. Air Force Academy.
Back in September 2020, Trump faced criticism, including from Biden, for his cautious walk down a ramp during a West Point commencement ceremony. Biden, who was a presidential candidate at the time, took a jab at the Republican incumbent, highlighting the difference in their walking styles.
Drawing attention to his own agility, Biden jokingly remarked, “Look at how he steps and look at how I step. Watch how I run up ramps and he stumbles down ramps. Come on.” The incident was covered by The New York Times, with the headline, “Trump’s Halting Walk Down Ramp Raises New Health Questions.”
However, on Thursday, Biden found himself on the ground after delivering the commencement address at the Air Force Academy earlier in the day. The White House explained that the president tripped over a sandbag but fortunately sustained no injuries from the fall.
This stumble is not the first for the octogenarian president. In 2021, he fell on the steps while boarding Air Force One at Joint Base Andrews. These instances of falling are likely to contribute to ongoing concerns about Biden’s health and age, particularly as he is seeking re-election, which would potentially keep him in office until early 2029 when he would be 86 years old.
Upon being informed of Biden’s fall on Thursday, Trump, who is also running for another term in the White House, immediately referenced the ramp controversy from 2020. He expressed hope that Biden wasn’t injured but commented on the overall situation, emphasizing the need for caution and care when navigating ramps, even if it means tiptoeing down.
The incident serves as a reminder of the irony that can emerge in politics, as the tables have turned, and Biden experienced a stumble similar to the one he previously criticized Trump for.
