world-trade-center-freedon-towerThe call came in on this morning: “There’s a fire at One World Trade Center.”

And just like on 9/11, firefighters bravely ascended the high-rise with one mission in mind.

“The fire was on the 89th, 90th and 91st Floors, and our job was to extinguish that,” Manhattan Borough Commander Jim Esposito told 1010 WINS’ Steve Sandberg.

Esposito said that luckily, this time it was a small fire – just some construction materials that went up in smoke. But it did take over an hour to get the blaze under control due to the challenge of getting water 89 stories up.

Officials said that this incident has sparked a review of how to better fight a fire in a skyscraper that’s under construction.

“We’re going to do calculations … we’ll come up with some engineering, some numbers,” Esposito said.

One firefighter suffered minor injuries while fighting the blaze, according to Fire Department spokesman James Long.

There was no major damage, and construction remains on schedule.
