Israel’s Economy Ministry boasted that Israeli food prices fell by 5% in the last two years, according to OECD (Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development) reports, while salaries rose an average 3%, but admitted that food in Israel was still 19% dearer than overall OECD prices.

The drop was due to increased beef imports and other food, a 1% VAT decrease and a 3.5% corporate tax cut, the ministry claimed.

The Globes financial paper rained on the ministry’s parade, saying that many financial analysts and retail industry personnel were surprised at the ministry figures and that the actual OECD report said that food prices in Israel only fell by 1.2%.

  1. What prices dropped? All the food prices I’ve seen in the past 2 years have only stayed the same or have gone up (but sometimes in sneaky ways-foe example tuna that was 19.90 shkl for 4 cont is now 16.90-the cans look identical, however the old tun had 112 grams w/o water and the new cans are 98 grams about 14% less 19.90 -14% is 2.80 or 17.10 – (the cans were downsizedby a few mm but unless you put one can next to the other it is unpercievable) now people believe they got the same thing for cheaper-so the next time when the price slowly creaps back to 19.90 nobody notices they think it’s just going back to its regular price while in reality the price increased by 14%! Fruits & veg prices have increased, meat and chicken increased, milk products increased,I can not figure out where any prices have dropped!
