foodstampedLow-income Americans are bracing for $5 billion in food stamp cuts to go into effect today, slashing monthly benefits for the one in seven Americans who depend on them to feed their families. Needy Americans are expected to lose about $36 per month on the average $275.13 household benefit.

The cuts are hitting now because extra funding provided in President Obama’s 2009 stimulus bill is expiring, and bipartisan groups of lawmakers voted to keep the cuts in exchange for increased education funding and school nutrition programs.

In addition to the impact on the poor, the cuts are expected to have a negative impact on the economy, decreasing sales for grocers and other food retailers. Read more at NBC News.

  1. The way mainstream is making it sound is like people will starve when in reality they are cutting like $35 a month….. Please if they really want to make cuts they should limit what can be purchased no soda .nosh ..steak ..pizza …. only no frills items then we will see how many povershed people sign up for snap. The snap particiapnts get more than the middle class….

  2. While $35.00 may not seem much to you Chaim, it makes life evwn more difficult to for my family. We have 5 girls, 7 boys myself and my beloved wife. We do not ever buy anything that is not essential, Yet my children complain of hunger all the time. Though I would very much like to have more children for the first time I am having doubts whether we should have more children. I know their are other frum Jews in even worse condition than my family. I just hope the government will restore the $35.00. Though knowwing O’bama, and his contempt for poor and hungry children I doubt he will do anything.

  3. many will lose more than $36 that was just an average. Some with lose $200+.

The Fed is printing $85 billion a month so this is a drop in the bucket for the government. Also all the money goes right back into the economy which is good for the overall economy.

The truth is that the rich have been getting a lot richer. Between 1979 and 2007 income for the top 1% has grown 275% but only 18%
    for the bottom 5th.

During the first two years of the nation’s economic recovery, the mean net worth of households in the upper 7% of the wealth distribution rose by an estimated 28%, while the mean net worth of households in the lower 93% dropped by 4%, according to a Pew Research Center analysis

    This is the real issue

  4. Just go to the supermarket. You will see the food stamp people with overloaded carts while the people who actually have to pay have to think about what they will
buy. They in actuality are better off than the people that work.

  5. The attitude of the first two commenters indicates that they have no understanding of how stretched are the budgets of poor frum Jews.

  6. Your ignorance is shining thru! They have large families KN”H and they have to feed them. This Medina shel chesed helps them out. What a tremendous matana. If cheapskates like you would at least give your required maser money, maybe these people wouldn’t have to come on to the Government.

  7. Even with the cuts my neighbors on food stamps who don’t work (or work off the books) will still have a lot higher standard of living and buy much more expensive food then me.

  8. Some of these posts are very puzzling. The people who are behind the food stamp cuts are the right-wing Republicans in the House of Representatives. They are the ones who insisted on the cuts and want to cut even more. Thank Rand Paul, Paul Ryan, Boehner, Cruz and company. The President opposed the cuts, but since our President shares governing the country with Congress, he couldn’t prevent the cuts.

  9. people who think that people receivefoodstamps should be penalized and that they don’t deseve them should wake up when your child is telling you there hungry and your pay just does not cover all of your bill well the deseve yes there are people who abuse them but don’t judge everyone cause you don’t know what is going on in there life
