On Monday, for a brief period, those visiting Ford Motor Company’s X account were met with three tweets supporting Palestinian causes that had no connection to the company’s operations. The first tweet simply read, “Free Palestine.” A minute later, another tweet appeared, declaring, “Israel is a terrorist state.” Shortly thereafter, a third message followed: “ALL EYES ON GAZA.”
These posts were quickly deleted, and Ford issued a statement clarifying that they had not been authorized.
“Our X account was briefly compromised and the previous three posts were not authorized or posted by Ford,” the company explained. “We are investigating the issue, and apologize for any confusion caused.”
This episode comes amid the ongoing war that began with Hamas’s attack on Israel over 15 months ago, which has spurred intense criticism of Israeli actions in Gaza. The incident also resonated deeply because of Ford’s headquarters being in Detroit, a city with a significant Arab-American population, where pro-Palestinian and anti-Israel sentiments have been strong. Additionally, the controversy echoed Ford’s troubling history of antisemitism under its founder, Henry Ford.
Ford’s antisemitic legacy included the use of a newspaper he owned to promote anti-Jewish content, such as the infamous forgery The Protocols of the Elders of Zion.
Screenshots of the deleted tweets, which circulated widely on social media, sparked both praise and backlash. US Representative Ritchie Torres, a pro-Israel Democrat from New York, tweeted, “The Ford Motor Company must have been hacked by the Free Palestine movement.” Many of the comments on his tweet speculated that a Ford employee might have accidentally tweeted from the company account, unaware of which account was active at the time.
