Former Republican National Committee (RNC) Chairman Michael Steele said Monday that conservatives who do not wish to be part of the party without former President Trump leading it are free to leave.

“You have 46 percent of the folks saying they will follow Trump,” Steele said Monday on MSNBC’s “Morning Joe.” “I’m like, OK, there’s the door. Y’all go do your thing, and we’ll just pick up the pieces on this side and keep moving. And that’s the battle.”

Steele was referring to a new Suffolk University-USA Today poll released Sunday that found 46 percent of Republicans would abandon the GOP and join a Trump party if the former president decided to create one.

Only 27 percent of respondents said they would stay with the GOP, with the remainder indicating they are undecided.

  1. Not a surprising response from Mr Steele, push away true conservatives. Instead of expressing some accommodation, he says, “there’s the door”. If you remember the Tea Party , a movement which tried to influence the GOP towards conservatism. The party went along with it, only to its advantage in an election year, then turned on the movement returning to their Rino ways. Trump came and ignited the party, not the swamp creatures like McConnell who resented him rocking the boat. The swamp Republicans did nothing to reelect Trump, allowing the nonsensical mail in ballot to be put in the stimulus bill. They abandoned Trump when there was voter irregularities, it didn’t impact them. So, it appears either the GOP responds to the will of the people or there will be a “new” party of conservative views which will send McConnell and the rest to the depths of the swamp. Don’t feel bad for McConnell and his cohorts, they’ve enriched themselves plenty during their “public service”. There’s the door Mitch.

  2. If I’m correct, I believe that Mr. Steele was affiliated with the anti-Trump Lincoln project. If that is the case, what would he be expected to say?
