Israeli Prime Minister Bibi Netanyahu is undergoing a planned surgery at Hadassah Ein Kerem Medical Center in Yerushalayim tonight to have his prostate gland removed. A team of four specialists will carry out the operation: Professor Ofer Gufrit, who leads the Urology Department at Hadassah; Dr. Ehud Gnessin, a prominent urologist at Shamir – Assaf Harofeh Hospital and Assuta Medical Centers; and Professor Mordechai Duvdevani, the head of the endourology unit at Hadassah. Dr. Stephane Ledot, who heads the anesthesia department at Hadassah Ein Kerem, will be in charge of anesthesia.
“The Hadassah management has requested that Dr. Ehud Gnessin join the team of surgeons, due to his extensive experience,” the hospital stated.
While Netanyahu undergoes this medical procedure and recovery, Justice Minister Yariv Levin, Israel’s Deputy Prime Minister, will step in as acting Prime Minister. Foreign Minister Israel Katz will assume leadership of the Cabinet and will have the authority to convene a Cabinet meeting if required. Decisions will be made by Levin during Netanyahu’s absence.
In a related development, the Tel Aviv District Court has approved Netanyahu’s request to postpone the hearings in his ongoing legal case that were originally scheduled for this week, due to the surgery and the recovery time needed afterward.
