gafniIsraeli Attorney General Yehuda Weinstein came under fire on Sunday for changes he made to the draft legislation aimed at increasing charedi enlistment in the army.

One change was making the draft law, written up by the Peri Committee, only a temporary measure valid only until 2020. After that, all Jewish men of military age would have to enlist at age 18. Yeshiva students would then be able to defer their IDF service for 36 months, until age 21, at which time they have to enlist in the military or civilian service.

MK Moshe Gafni of UTJ was livid with this portion of the bill, stating that chareidi parties would halt all cooperation with the committee and advise all yeshiva bochurim not to cooperate with the IDF in any regard.

“I will tell every single person, including those who are not studying in yeshiva, not to cooperate with the IDF at all,” said Gafni.

  1. HUH, can not understand the changes, the implications, or the subdivisions of this law, when and who must enlist and when?

  2. I’m beginning to think that this draft law may be good for the Jews. Creating such a combative stance against lomdei Torah hopefully will serve to rally the troops around limud haTorah with enthusiasm and mesirus nefesh. Sometimes we need a little color war to realize which team we’re really on!
