MK Moshe Gafni paid a visit to Rav Meir Tzvi Bergman, the Rosh Yeshiva of Rashbi, to express his condolences on the passing of Rav Bergman’s wife. During their meeting, they also discussed the ongoing issue of the draft law.
Gafni explained the difficulty of passing the draft law, stating, “The problem with the draft is that we are unable to pass a law, and this is the ongoing issue we face.” He added that Prime Minister Netanyahu understands the coalition’s reliance on resolving this matter.
Rav Bergman questioned whether the government genuinely cares about the issue, to which Gafni responded, “They care very much, but they are not succeeding.” Rav Bergman, unconvinced, pressed, “But isn’t that their job?” Gafni agreed, saying, “Yes, they must do it.” When Rav Bergman encouraged Gafni to fight for a solution, Gafni reassured him, “Yes, that’s what we are doing.”
These remarks contrast with Gafni’s usual reluctance to make public comments on the matter. In a recent interview, he mentioned that “any statement on the draft law causes harm.”
Just days before, Shas leader Aryeh Deri had also visited Rav Bergman, telling him that yeshiva students would not be negatively affected and suggested that awaiting the arrival of Moshiach might be the only true solution.

If Zinezeinashtotshayne drafted all the protesters, they’d flee to Michigan and Miami (Siyonim and maskilim) and we’d have Gan Eden.
