Gafni: Netanyahu Made A Mistake

MK Moshe Gafni reiterated a statement by Yisroel Eichler that Bibi Netanyahu erred by not passing a budget and by failing to let Benny Gantz become prime minister in a rotation government.

“There were arguments about this,” Gafni said. “I thought he [Netanyahu] was mistaken and I told him so.”

But Gafni disagreed with Eichler that “Four times, we abandoned the future of the Torah world to Netanyahu’s illusions [that he would be reelected].”

“We did not act for Netanyahu’s survival,” Gafni insisted. “We acted for the traditional public that follows Netanyahu. If the traditional public moves over to another party and supports someone else, then we’ll support him. I want the State of Israel to be a Jewish country where the traditional public is a dominant force.”

Gafni’s statement was in line with Rav Shach’s famous denunciation of the left in 1990, when Shimon Peres tried to set up a left-wing government with chareidi support.

“If there are kibbutzim,” Rav Shach declared at the time, “who don’t know what Yom Kippur is, don’t know what Shabbos is, don’t know what the mikveh is, who raise rabbits and pigs [for food] — do they have a connection to their Father?”

“The Alignment [the name of future Labor party] is something holy?” Rav Shach added. “They cut themselves off from our entire past and sought a new faith. If there’s no Shabbos and no Yom Kippur, in what sense are you Jewish?”

Gafni also branded Prime Minister Naftoli Bennett as a traitor, saying, “The State of Israel is constituted of two central blocs, right and left. The right-wing bloc voted for Bennett, and he betrayed them and transferred their votes to a leftist government.”
