MK Moshe Gafni, chairman of Degel HaTorah, delivered a fiery address at the Bnei HaYeshivos conference, launching a sharp attack amid the ongoing draft law crisis and what he described as persecution of yeshiva students.

Gafni likened the current battle against Torah learners to historic persecutions, declaring: “There is no existence for the Jewish people without those who learn Torah. The war today against the Torah world reminds me of the Romans – this is repeating itself now, days when they fought against the Jewish people to prevent them from learning Torah. We will not allow this to happen, and we will fight with all our strength.”

He continued, “From this holy gathering we declare publicly: the Torah world will not only continue and remain strong, it will grow even more, and it will be the one leading the Jewish people.”

According to Gafni, for some politicians, the dispute over drafting yeshiva students is not the true motive: “There are many for whom this is not about the Torah learners at all. They only want us to leave the coalition – and we will not let them decide who rules here.”

Gafni acknowledged that relations between the chareidi factions and their coalition partners are far from warm: “This is a partnership where we don’t see our partners fighting for us.” Still, he emphasized that the alliance with the traditional public remains strong: “The traditional public is our partner. Its leadership sometimes does things that should not be done to partners – but the public is with us.”

  1. The Zionist Erev Rav government who’ve been compared recently to the Romans, Nikolai, Amalek is the last Galus before Moshiach’s coming bimhera v”o.

  2. I can’t stand this. this will all, bez’h, be over soon and we’ll all forget about it. comparing our meager struggles with roman persecutions is a disgrace to those who held strong during that era. Fact: if you fail to show up for the draft, you are sent to jail, not executed. stop thinking that we have the same issues.

    • Are the boys in jail licking honey and enjoying their vacation there? For those who consider themselves Jews to arrest someone for learning Torah is equivalent to the Romans’ persecuting for learning Torah.
