Israel’s government watchdog will investigate Friday’s Mount Meron disaster that left 45 people dead and more than 150 injured at what was supposed to be a joyous return on the Jewish holiday of Lag B’Omer to the tomb of Rabbi Shimon bar Yochai after last year’s COVID-19 restrictions but instead turned into a deadly stampede.

State Comptroller Matanyahu Englman announced the launch of a special probe into the incident at a press conference on Monday, saying that the tragedy that unfolded “could have been prevented.”

Englman cited two reports issued by his office in 2008 and 2011 warning of overcrowding dangers at the Meron site that was not prepared to handle the massive crowds of hundreds of thousands of worshipers flocking to northern Israel’s Upper Galilee region every year.
