In light of the publicized guidelines and the danger posed by the coronavirus that is spreading at an alarming rate, the gedolim of Bnei Brak publishing a letter last night stating that it is a “great mitzvah not to daven in shuls these days.”

The rabbonim wrote; “To all our dear and beloved brethren, because the doctors determined that the danger of the epidemic is very serious, and the doctors believe that there is a very great chance of being infected within the shuls…according to the doctors’ instructions, people should daven outside with no more than 10 attendees in one place, two meters away from each other.”

The letter is signed Rav Yitzchok Zilberstein, Rav Shimon Baadani and Rav Sariel Rosenberg and Rav Y. Silman.

At the same time, the chief rabbis of the city of Bnei Brak, Rav Shevach Zvi Rosenblatt and Rav Chaim Yitzchok Eizik Landau, also worte a strong letter stating that people must not daven in shuls.

It should be pointed out that in the United States, rabbonim and doctors have strongly commanded people not to daven with minyanim at all, even outside, but to daven b’yechidus in one’s home.

  1. Any rov that says to daven with a minyon inside is irresponsibly putting himself and others in danger. Many doctors have said someone davening with a minyon is a roisaiach. Responsible rabbonim (those that have been in contact with the doctors) have said its a mitzva haba b’avaira. The problem is many in our community only have kosher phones, don’t have internet and don’t listen to the radio. Some people are still clueless.
There is another issue in our community. Many don’t have a shul or rov that is truly their rov that can guide them in a time like this. Of course, if they have a question they call a rov. But for shachris they daven in one shul. mincha in a second and mariv in a third. On Friday night its the local shtible Maybe Shabbos morning they go to “their” rov or rebbe and shabbos mincha again its a local shtible. Nothing wrong with this but in a time like this you need true guidance.

  2. To Ah Yid: Anonymous didn’t write to daven in a shul or otherwise indoors, he said with a minyan! Yes, there are those who said to daven OUTDOORS with each person standing six feet or more from the ones around him. (Also depends on location… I reckon not in Brooklyn)
