steinbrennerGeorge Steinbrenner, who rebuilt the New York Yankees into a sports empire with a mix of bluster and big bucks that polarized fans all across America, died today. He had just celebrated his 80th birthday July 4.

Steinbrenner had suffered a heart attack and was taken to St. Joseph’s Hospital in Tampa, Fla., and died at about 6:30 a.m, a person close to the owner told The Associated Press.

For more than 30 years, Steinbrenner lived up to his billing as “the Boss,” a nickname he earned and clearly enjoyed as he ruled with an iron fist. The Yankees won six World Series titles during his reign.

He was known for feuds, but as his health declined, Steinbrenner let sons Hal and Hank run more of the family business.

Steinbrenner was in fragile health for years, resulting in fewer public appearances and pronouncements. Yet dressed in his trademark navy blue blazer and white turtleneck, he was the model of success: The Yankees won seven World Series titles after his reign began in 1973.

His death was the second in three days to rock the Yankees. Bob Sheppard, the team’s public address announcer from 1951-07, died Sunday at 99.

  1. why is this posted on your website? Will you post it next year on this date for today’s YahrTzeits? Is this supposed to make us cry for the CHURBAN?

  2. Why is this important to us yes why many of us follow the Yankees, no one will tell you its a Jewish thing. So his death should not be posted as news on your website!!!

  3. BD”E NY lost a great leader. What will we do without him. May Hashem grant us others who could lead us in the future like the leaders of old.

  4. I assume a posting on Matzav about the demise of Mr. Steinbrenner is done to teach something positive, possibly to take a lesson from his life.
Well, I think that lesson just might be to view his life as diametrically opposed to that of what a Torah Jew’s should be. His attitude of “winning at all costs”, and his lack of “middos”, as evidenced by his reputation for ranting, raving, yelling, hiring and then firing, etc. is everything that we are taught NOT to emulate.
True, he was a master businessman…but at what costs? His lack of respect to others, his boisterous demeanor, his haughtiness in dealing with interpersonal relationships, will assure that I, for one, will not miss him.

  5. Why in the world has Matzav started to post Goyishe news. Next thing I know Matzav is going to post about actors etc. To be honest you have stepped far over the red line.

  6. I don’t understand why this is on Matzav. I myself am a sports fan, but that doesn’t mean that ou should be posting the scores!
