A German court handed Monday a life sentence to the man behind the deadly Halle shooting in early October 2019, on the Jewish holiday of Yom Kippur.

The attacker, a far-right radical, first tried to breach the doors of the synagogue, where some 52 worshippers were present at the moment, resulting in over 50 counts of murder.

He was also charged with two counts of murder, killing a woman that was passing by the synagogue and a man at a nearby kebab shop after he failed to make it into the temple.

In his closing statement, the attacker did not appear to show much remorse for his plot, which could have amounted to the worst anti-Semitic incident in Germany, Deutsche Welle reports.

Instead, he reiterated his anti-Semitic views and spewed some Holocaust denialist propaganda — which in itself is a crime in Germany.
