gingrich-trumpRepublican front-runner Newt Gingrich called Donald Trump “a great showman” Monday as he became the latest Republican presidential candidate to kiss The Donald’s ring.

Gingrich further ingratiated himself with Trump by defending the brash developer against criticism from rival GOP candidates like Ron Paul who say having Trump moderate a presidential debate would create a “circus” atmosphere.

“I’m actually very surprised that one of my friends would have said that,” said Gingrich after his hour-long private powwow with the mogul at Trump Tower.

Then, referring to Trump, the candidate added: “I thought it was great when he agreed to do it.”

“Sometimes we have to get a certain sense of humor in politics,” Gingrich said of Trump. “He is a genuine American icon in his own right.”

So far, Gingrich is the only GOP candidate who has agreed to take part in the Dec. 27 Newsmax debate that Trump is to moderate.

Paul and Utah Gov. John Hunstman have already flatly said no.

Huntsman Monday told Fox News that Trump exemplifies “what is wrong with politics.”

“If he had any courage at all, he would be running for President,” Huntsman added.

The other Republicans have not yet weighed in.

Gingrich is his party’s latest front-runner – a position Trump held briefly earlier in the campaign when he was flirting with a White House run.

In paying Trump a call, Gingrich was following in the footsteps of Mitt Romney and some of the other GOP presidential wannabes.

“Donald Trump is a great showman,” Gingrich said. “He’s also a great businessman … I think that we have to be open to new ways of doing things and new ways of approaching things.”

Earlier, Trump dismissed Paul and Hunstman as “joke candidates.”

“A lot of Republicans, top Republicans, asked me to do the debate,” Trump said on NBC’s “Today” show.

Trump, whose short-lived campaign was built on questioning President Obama’s origins on behalf of the birthers, also defended Romney against charges by fellow Republicans that he’s flip-flopped on issues like abortion, health care and immigration.

“We all change our mind on things,” Trump said.

But Trump, who has not yet endorsed a candidate for the White House, said he might consider relaunching his campaign if the GOP doesn’t pick a viable candidate to take on President Obama.

“I would certainly think about running as an independent,” he said.
