newt-gingrichA very confident New Gingrich asserted to ABC News this afternoon that he will be the Republican presidential nominee.

“I’m going to be the nominee,” the former Speaker told ABC News. “It’s very hard not to look at the recent polls and think that the odds are very high I’m going to be the nominee.”

The bold assertion came after Gingrich refused to criticize the Republican challengers who have begun attacking him and his record.

TAPPER: “How do you respond to Republicans who say if you don’t draw distinctions with Mitt Romney and others who are attacking you, if you don’t point out their perceived vulnerabilities, Barack Obama and the Democrats sure aren’t going to share that same reluctance and you are doing Obama a favor by staying positive?”

GINGRICH: “They are not going to be the nominee. I don’t have to go around and point out the inconsistencies of people who are not going to be the nominee. They are not going to be the nominee.”

TAPPER: “You are going to be the nominee?”

GINGRICH: “I’m going to be the nominee. It’s very hard not to look at the recent polls and think that the odds are very high I’m going to be the nominee. And by the way I don’t object if people want to attack me, that’s their right. All I’m suggesting that it’s not going to be very effective and that people are going to get sick of it very fast. And the guys who attacked each other in the debates up to now, every single one of them have lost ground by attacking. So they should do what they and their consultants want to do. I will focus on being substantive and I will focus on Barack Obama.”

  1. Its always the same, people making moronic comments about things just to sound smart. “he lacks presidential judgement and persnality”, thats just stupid, you didn’t even mentin any facts to support your statement. If you have a valid concern, share it with ppl in an inteligent manner.DONT JUST CREATE “HOCK”!! I for 1 see a great president in Gingrich, He is extremely knowledgable, and experienced, not to mention practical, as can be demonstrated by watching any of the debates. Everyone has their snags, if you find one, let ppl KNOW,don’t gossip, bring facts to support your opinion.

  3. Gingrich is certainly knowledgeable and experienced, not to mention creative and brilliant. However, those things are not enough to make a good president. There is a big difference between intelligence and wisdom. Gingrich has the former, but I question his possession of the latter.

Also, he was one of the most unpopular politicians around in the late 90’s. You think none of that residue is still around in both his personality and the public’s feelings towards him? He tends to be confronational and to stick his foot in his mouth. Romney is stronger in a general election.

  4. Oh, and by the way, if you ever feel that any of my comments are “moronic”, please let me know so that I can set you straight.

  5. My criticism of Gingrich’s judgement is based on common knowledge: his indiscretions, his irresponsible spending habits, and his pompous, inflammatory (and often tangental) speech.
