helen-thomasVeteran White House correspondent Helen Thomas announced her retirement a short while ago following an uproar over comments she made on camera last month about Jews in Israel.

Hearst Corporation, which employed Thomas as a columnist, put out a brief story by Hearst News Service announcing the retirement “effective immediately.”

The announcement came after the White House Correspondents Association decried her remarks as “indefensible” and began to consider whether Thomas should continue to have the privilege of a front-row seat in the briefing room. White House Press Secretary Robert Gibbs called her remarks “offensive and reprehensible” today, as other former White House spokesmen called for Thomas to be fired.

The controversy escalated quickly over the weekend after the video surfaced online showing Thomas last month saying that Jews should “get…out of Palestine,” suggesting they go instead to Germany, Poland and the United States. The video, shot by New York Rabbi David Nesenoff, was posted on several prominent websites and prompted a swift apology from Thomas on Friday.

“I deeply regret my comments,” she said in the statement, claiming they “do not reflect my heart-felt belief that peace will come to the Middle East only when all parties recognize the need for mutual respect and tolerance.”

The apology did not satisfy her critics.

  1. B’H this Machashefa stepped down. This was the defining moment in my lifetime when latent anti-semitism was given a public face by a mainstream journalist. Remember my fellow Yidden, the Liberal is the modern day equivalent of the Nazis, they are our Eternal Enemies.

  2. You can go back to Lebanon where your parents came from, and it’s not bad if the door assists you on the way out.

  3. I truly believe that it is time for us to rethink what our status in this wonderful country as Jews is at this point. I highly doubt that this comment would have been made had Bush or any other president had been in office. I think that this is unfortunately a reflection of the President and his policies.

  4. she got exactly what she wanted – she is close to 90 and probably ready to retire anyway and now she did it in a way that she won’t be forgotten. someone should sue her.

  5. I liked her better as the wicked witch of the west in the wiazrd of oz
If it wasn’t her she should cast for tha role!

  6. Mind you, she wasn’t fired. She was given the option to retire. Neither did our Prez express his outrage or at least disagreement with the old hack. She reflects the views of many people in America’s establishment.

  7. she looks a lot like the Wicked Witch of the West. i think a company could use her likeness to make Purim masks. but please give the proceeds to support Jews in Eretz Yisrael. that would be sweet.

  8. I am glad the wicked witch is gone(she actually looks like the wicked witch)..I like how she was given an ‘option’ for retirement-we all know what that means–the witch is 90 yrs old. and probably
probably getting ‘full retirement’ benefits !!!
    Oh boy, what a punishment.
