Google, which was scanning the content of personal emails sent by Gmail users in order to target users with personalized advertisements, has announced it will stop the practice, according to a post on the search giant’s blog. Google made the decision in an attempt to reassure customers that their communications were confidential. “G Suite’s Gmail is already not used as input for ads personalization,” said Diane Greene, the senior vice president in charge of Google Cloud.
“Google has decided to follow suit later this year in our free consumer Gmail service. Consumer Gmail content will not be used or scanned for any ads personalization after this change.” Google will continue to advertise, but the information will be taken from browsing, searches, and physical location.
