Republican lawmakers have strongly criticized President Biden for what they perceive as the “weaponization” of the federal government, following the revelation that the Justice Department has charged former President Donald Trump over his handling of classified documents. Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, a prominent contender in the 2024 GOP presidential primary, condemned the unprecedented indictment, stating that the weaponization of federal law enforcement poses a serious threat to a free society.

House Speaker Kevin McCarthy described it as a “dark day” for the country and expressed concern over the charges against Trump, especially considering that Biden himself has been under investigation for similar reasons. McCarthy emphasized that it is unconscionable for a president to indict his leading opponent and pledged support for Trump in the face of what he considers a grave injustice.

On social media, Trump announced that he has been indicted by a federal grand jury on charges related to mishandling classified White House documents seized from his Florida estate. Jim Trusty, Trump’s lawyer, confirmed the seven charges during an interview on CNN. The White House reportedly learned about the indictment from media reports and was caught off guard by the news.

Republican lawmakers, including Senator Josh Hawley, Senator Marco Rubio, and Representative Jim Jordan, criticized the indictment, with Jordan calling it a sad day for America and expressing his support for President Trump. Jordan had previously demanded an unredacted copy of the Justice Department’s memorandum outlining the scope of special counsel Jack Smith’s investigation.

The announcement of the indictment coincided with the handover of an informant file to the House Oversight Committee. The file, held by the FBI, accuses President Biden of a $5 million bribery scheme during his tenure as vice president. House GOP Conference Chair Elise Stefanik referred to the DOJ’s case against Trump as a “witch hunt,” while Matt Gaetz dismissed the indictment as a hoax and expressed confidence that Trump would retake the White House.

Former Arkansas Governor Asa Hutchinson, who has launched his own campaign for the White House, regarded Trump’s second indictment as a distraction that reinforces the need for another Republican candidate to move the party forward.

The investigation into Trump revolves around hundreds of classified documents seized from his Florida resort after the 2020 election. Trump had failed to hand over these documents, leading to a dispute with the National Archives and Records Administration. The Justice Department was also investigating allegations that Trump had possession of classified documents related to a potential military plan to invade Iran. Meanwhile, President Biden, who is also facing a special counsel investigation, has not been charged by the Justice Department for mishandling classified information.

Trump vehemently denied any wrongdoing and expressed his belief that this was a dark day for the United States. He declared his innocence on Truth Social and vowed to “Make America Great Again.” Trump has previously been indicted in Manhattan on charges of falsifying business records in connection with a scheme to suppress negative information during his 2016 presidential campaign.

  1. Joe Biden did nothing wrong by illegally storing highly classified documents in his personal garage. No investigation will be done. No prosecution will happen.

  2. Donald Trump is in trouble. Basically, that is true.

Whether it is Jan 6th or Documents, the witch hunts are too many whisps of rain for me to believe that every tripped tyke out there in the democrat party has a pitch fork aimed at the corrupt ex-president.

It is showing we need new leadership and Donald even if he was his best can not stop the news that grows and does not favor his arrogant drive to power. This is a time to wait on meetings that are taking place and free the choice that we can finally get a commander-in-chief who plays fair.

By the way, does it just seem that frozen bagels are better than some of the store bought ones? I like my Lenders and Donald could just sit back and try to nag brunch.

  3. If you do not think Biden is weaponizing the DOJ, think again.

He is turning this world into a society where every kid wipes his nose to say hi.
