Republican Sen. Ron Johnson on Monday defended his comparison over the weekend between his re-election campaign and the passengers of the hijacked flight that went down in rural Pennsylvania on 9/11.

While addressing the Wisconsin Republican Party on Saturday, Johnson said it was “American” of his supporters to vote, adding, “Now, it may not be life and death, like the vote passengers on United Flight 93 took, but boy is it consequential.”

After outcry about the unusual comparison, Johnson told radio station WTMJ defended the remarks: “I used my unique contact with the finest among us and visiting them in Walter Reed and the inspiration they provide, and the inspiration provided by these heroes of 9/11 who knew that their plane had been turned into a weapon, okay, but still took the vote.” Read more at TPM.
