New Jersey Gov. Phil Murphy has a likely cancerous tumor on his left kidney that will be surgically removed in March, Murphy confirmed late Saturday.

Murphy, 62, the chairman of the Democratic Governors Association, learned of the three-centimeter tumor during a recent checkup, spokesperson Mahen Gunaratna said. About 90 percent of tumors of this type are cancerous.

The governor will undergo a partial nephrectomy in early March at a hospital in New York City, where he will remain for several days before being discharged, Gunaratna said.

Lt. Gov. Sheila Oliver will serve as acting governor while Murphy is in the hospital.
