david-greenfieldThe NY Post reports: Things are getting down and dirty between candidates David Greenfield and Joe Lazar in the imminent 44th District City Council race. The latest allegation comes from City Councilmember Lew Fidler, a Greenfield supporter, concerning the upcoming Passover holiday just days after the March 23 election.”I’ve heard threats to withhold Passover food to the needy from those organizations whose leadership is aligned with Greenfield,” said Fidler. “I’m not blaming Joe Lazar, but there are people who get carried away and lose sight of what is appropriate or inappropriate.”

Fidler said he’s heard this from several organizations and it seems — to him — there is too much smoke about the allegation for there not to be a fire.

“We have not seen this kind of stuff since Tammany Hall when they gave a turkey to come to vote or a bag of coal to heat your house. I want to make it clear, I’m not accusing Joe Lazar or his campaign, but I feel that people that support him are out of control,” said Fidler.

Lazar campaign manager Gary Tilzer called the allegation ridiculous.

“These are the last-ditch desperate accusations of a quickly fading Greenfield campaign,” said Tilzer. “It is despicable that David Greenfield has sunk so low.”

The allegation comes as Mayor Bloomberg is expected to campaign with Greenfield this week in Bensonhurst and Borough Park.

Greenfield continues to have wide support from the Kings County Democratic Party and many local elected officials either in or surrounding the district.

Lazar has the strong support of Assemblymember Dov Hikind, Comptroller John Liu and many organizations in Borough Park.

  1. I strongly suggests all frum politicians to discuss all kinds of statements as these with their local rav. If they want Siyata Deshmaya they must behave in the right way!

  2. When will we rid ourselves of this ongoing chilul Hashem?

Orthodox Jews have no place in politics. Our community has sufficient gentile friends to nominate and elect to sit in the halls of government.

It has never been the way of Torah Jews to be members of the governing bodies of the nations during our long and bitter galus. There was an exception to this rule made in the Polish Sejm but that was with Gedolim of the stature of Rav Meir Shapiro Zt’l and the Reisher Rav Zt’l filling those positions.

When an orthodox Jew assumes an elected seat our community loses out. Instead of there being a focus on the issues that concern us the politician becomes the issue. As an Orthodox Jew every allegation made against him smears us all even when the charges are unfounded or petty. We are so much more better off when we can back a gentile (who is loyal to us for our support) and get him to work on our agenda without the distractions an orthodox politician becomes busy with. Indeed, a gentile can openly champion positions dear to our community without being accused of pandering to “his own”. The orthodox pols often back down from the positions we want them to fight for in order to appear “even-handed” and “one of the boys” and not a “shik-yingel” of his co-religionists.

It is especially repugnant when the orthodox candidates are such poor examples of our community. These am-haratzim behave like goyim and embarrass us all. It is reprehensible for the askanim of various mosdos to make endorsements in an effort to feel important and convince themselves that there will be a payback later on. Only the Gedolei Yisroel should be deciding on who to back. The askanim should be working on creating a gentile candidate they can rally around; not following the lead of these wannabees who cannot hold down a normal paying job and seek to make their fortune at the public trough.

As a wise man once said: “Show me a politician and I will show you a crook”. Lets not set ourselves up to being embarrased when the crook is “one of ours”.

Just look at the “nachas” we have suffered from “our” guys and you will understand what our point is.

  3. This headline is misleading, its not Greenfield and Lazar its their SUPPORTERS,

BOYAN and KRASNA who are GREENFIELD supporters were denied pesach food for their mosdos by Lazar supporters, they went to GREENFIELD and asked for his help, Greenfield contacted councilman Fidler who helped them getting the food, and now Fidler went to the press.

Again, this wasn’t done by LAZAR, it was done by his supporters,

and the outcry wasn’t done by GREENFIELD it was done by the MOSDOS who were denied food and by councilman Fidler who helped them getting it

  4. David has come out very strong, against toeiva marriage & said he would fight it. Joe Lazar on the other hand has been very wishy washy on this matter & has indicated he would NOT fight it if it ever came to pass R”L!
It’s up to the voters to decide who is going to fight for Kvod Shomayim and not just for $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$!

  5. Greenfield also tried to claim in last week’s Torah Times ad that he’s the only candidate that rents because he can’t afford to buy. BS. David Greenfield earns $290,000 a year. Thats right, you read correct: $290,000 a year. This is a public information.
