New York City Council Member Simcha Felder was joined by Brooklyn Borough President Marty Markowitz, Council Member Vincent Gentile and others to break ground for the construction of a new Kensington branch library to be located at 4207 18th Avenue. The 18,500 square foot, 2-story facility will be handicapped accessible and feature self-check machines,external book drops and First Give Year, teen and adult spaces.”I am ecstatic to see work begin on a magnificent and much needed addition to our neighborhood,” said Felder. “It is impossible to overstate the value of a library, particularly one as well designed as this, to a community. I cannot wait for these doors to open so children and adults can enjoy this library for years to come.”
The $13.56 million project was made possible by Mayor Bloomberg, Councilman Simcha Felder and Borough President Marty Markowitz. The state-of-the-art structure will include public computers for children and adults as well as public meeting spaces and wireless internet access throughout the building. The design allows for a substantial amount of natural light throughout the building. The new library will replace the current leased facility at 410 Ditmas Avenue. Construction of the new facility is projected to take two years to complete.
