The 8-year-old Guatemalan migrant who died this week in the custody of US Customs and Border Protection had the flu, according to the New Mexico Office of the Medical Investigator.
An official cause of death for Felipe Gomez Alonzo has not yet been determined, though an autopsy shows he tested positive for influenza B, the medical examiner’s office said Friday.
The boy, who was detained with his father, died shortly before midnight Christmas Eve at Gerald Champion Regional Medical Center in Alamogordo, New Mexico, about 90 miles north of the border crossing in El Paso, Texas.

An official cause of death is most likely pneumonia caused by flu, or maybe even sepsis from a secondary infection. Flu is another “harmless disease” according to antivaxxers.

Now Felipe Gomez Alonzo’s mother is making a sizable confession regarding the boy’s 2,000 mile trek from his native Guatemala.
Speaking at her home in a mountainous region of western Guatemala, Catarina Alonzo said neighbors had told the family that taking a child would provide her husband with a way in.
“Lots of them have gone with children and managed to cross, even if they’re held for a month or two. But they always manage to get across easily,” she told Reuters in an interview.
