moshe-berkowitz-1[Update below.] 2:30 a.m. EST: It is with great sadness that we report the tragic passing of habochur Moshe Berkowitz z”l. Moshe, a talmid at Yeshiva Ohr Yitzchok (Rabbi Wallerstein’s yeshiva) on East 15th Street in Flatbush, was killed this evening in a car accident at Avenue N and Ocean Avenue in Flatbush. He was 25.

It is believed that the driver of the vehicle that took Moshe’s life was under the influence of alcohol.  That driver was taken to nearby Kings County Hospital.

The accident occurred at about 11:30 p.m. As Moshe was driving on Avenue N toward Ocean Avenue, his car was hit with great force. Efforts to save Moshe by Flatbush Hatzolah members at the scene and physicians at Maimonides Medical Center in Boro Park were to no avail.

Levaya and kevurah info will be posted once it is finalized.

Umacha Hashem dimah mei’al kol ponim.

The following is a NY Daily News report:

A 25-year-old Brooklyn yeshiva student was killed when his car was struck by a drunken driver who may have been drag racing, police sources and a witness said.

The crash occurred on Ocean Ave. near Avenue N just after 11:35 p.m. Monday, police said.

The victim was driving a red Mercury Sable north on Ocean Ave. when he was struck by a southbound black Volkswagen that crossed the double yellow line, cops said.

The victim was rushed to Maimonides Hospital, where he died a short time later.

The suspect and a woman in the car with him were taken to the same hospital with minor injuries, police said. The driver’s blood-alcohol level was more than twice the legal limit of .08, sources said, and he is expected to be charged with vehicular manslaughter and driving while intoxicated.

A witness to the aftermath of the crash said the suspect and his passenger reeked of booze.

The witness, who identified himself only as Chad P., said two cars carrying the suspect’s friends pulled up moments after the collision.

“They were talking about racing, but then they started speaking in Russian so I didn’t understand,” Chad P. said. “The people in the other two cars took off after only a minute or two.”

  3. #1 what do you mean by “Basically 2 guys killed”? IT WAS ONLY 1 GUY! Also the driver probably already knows that he killed someone!

  4. G-d takes the best of us. Moshe was one of the most unassuming selfless people you will ever meet. He was always dedicated to others with a permanent smile on his face. Whether it be helping out in Shul, playing softball, or even a fantasy Baseball draft, Moshe was one person who never had a bad word to say to or about anyone.

Stunned disbelief – May g-d have mercy on us all

  5. Comment #6. from Joe states:

“Those Russian murderers should get the death penalty!”

Joe: I give you “triple dittos”!!

  6. Baruch Dayan Haemet..
Its Ironic the way things turn out..
I personally did not know him well, however several times when I was invited to simchas in Jewish events I saw him there, and in my mind I always wished to be just like him in every way.
He was a member of a community surrounded by many friends, his radiance of his smile showed him to be a G-D loving person. This was a person who had LIFE” looks, health, future and innocence.

  7. Someone should really update this because NY Times report shows that the driver of the other vehicle was not drunk at the time after a breathalyser test was conducted, results were 0.02. The media reported a lot of false information to such a delicate case like this which is sad. On the other hand, may Moshe rest in peace.

  8. Barych dayan haemet. Hello world wake up lets improve our selfs don’t be oblivious to what this tragedy is telling us don’t just look at the outer layer look deeper we can all improve an be like Moshe. Berkowitz
