HaGaon Rav Avrohom Gurwicz, rosh yeshiva of Yeshivas Gateshead, has issued an urgent and powerful call to the public, urging all shomrei Torah umitzvos to vote for the Eretz Hakodesh party in the World Zionist Organization (WZO).

Rav Gurwicz is the zekan roshei yeshivos in Europe and one of the ziknei roshei yeshivos in the world. Since 1982, he has been the rosh yeshivah of the Gateshead Yeshiva in England. Rav Gurwicz is a son of Rav Leib Gurwicz, the previous Gateshead rosh yeshiva, and a grandson of the renowned mashgiach Rav Elyah Lopian and son-in-law of Rav Elyah’s son, Rav Leib Lopian. Today, Rav Gurwicz is one of the eldest of all talmidim of Brisk in the world, having learned under the Brisker Rov.
In his letter, Rav Gurwicz writes:
“…לפי מה שנתברר שלההסתדרות הציונית העולמית יש השפעה גדולה על מה שנעשה בארץ ישראל, החליטו גדולי ישראל, הגאון ר’ חיים קנייבסקי זצ”ל ויבלח”ט הגאון ר’ שמואל קמינצקי שליט”א, שיש צורך שדעתה ורצונה של הציבור שומרי תורה ומצות תהיה לה השפעה על ההחלטות שנעשות על ידי מנהיגי ההסתדרות הציונית העולמית…”
“According to what has emerged, that the World Zionist Organization has a major influence on what goes on in Eretz Yisroel, it was decided by gedolei Yisroel, HaGaon Rav Chaim Kanievsky zt”l and ylch”t HaGaon Rav Shmuel Kamenetsky shlit”a, that there is a need for the opinion and the will of the tzibbur of shomrei Torah umitzvos to be in a position to have an impact on the decisions made by the leaders of the World Zionist Organization…”
Rav Gurwicz explains that it is vital for the Torah-observant community to have a significant influence on the decisions made within the WZO, just as it is necessary for the government of Israel to hear the opinions and desires of the shomrei Torah umitzvos public.
Rav Gurwicz continues:
“ולכן החליטו שמן הראוי ששומרי תורה ומצות ירשמו כחברי התנועה ארץ הקדש המסונפת לההסתדרות הציונית העולמית, כדי שתהיה להם כח מכריע במינוי מנהיגי ההסתדרות הציונית העולמית…”
“Therefore, gedolei Yisroel have decided that those who are shomrei Torah umitzvos should register as members of the Eretz Hakodesh movement, which is affiliated with the World Zionist Organization, so that they can have a deciding say in the appointments of the leaders of the World Zionist Organization…”
Rav Gurwicz stresses the importance of the shomrei Torah umitzvos community uniting in their efforts to join Eretz Hakodesh, thereby ensuring their ability to influence the direction of the WZO.
Rav Gurwicz concludes his letter with a heartfelt tefillah:
“ושחפץ השם בידם יצליח להגדיל תורה ולהאדירה ועכ”פ למנוע חילולה.”
“And may the Desire of Hashem be successful in their hand, to bring about an increase in Torah and its glory, and at the very least, to prevent its desecration.”
This call was initially issued on the second day of Rosh Chodesh Iyar in 5782. Now, in a new development, Rav Gurwicz reaffirmed his commitment to this cause by signing the very same proclamation again this past Tuesday of Parshas Ki Sisa 5785.
