nyc-cabsNew analysis suggests location is key when trying to catch a cab in New York City. Based on GPS data from approximately 90 million taxi routes – secretly monitored by the city – the best spots to be picked up have been identified.

According to the data, Penn Station ranks number one, followed closely by Columbus Circle.

Riders will find it’s easier to hail a cab on the Lower East Side at 11 p.m. Motzoei Shabbos than at Grand Central Terminal. Another factor to consider: the neighborhood you’re in. You are 25 times more likely to catch a cab in the West Village than in Washington Heights.

According to The New York Times, the Taxi and Limousine Commission hopes the information gathered “can be used to create helpful tie-ins for customers, like a new smartphone program that lets mobile users locate the ideal nearby corner to hail a cab.”

The data, collected in the first six months of 2009, is the first detailed record of New York City’s fast-moving transportation network.
