Nikki Haley, the U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations, on Wednesday strongly condemned the Syrian government in the wake of an alleged chemical weapons attack perpetrated on its own civilians this week.
“When the UN consistently fails in its duty to act collectively, there are times in the life of states that we are compelled to take our own action,” Haley said. She added that if the UN doesn’t take collective action, “we may.” Haley currently serves as the UN Security Council president, and she was speaking to the group as it discussed a resolution condemning Syrian President Bashar al-Assad’s regime for its violence. More than 70 people, including at least 20 children, died following the attack on Tuesday. Syria followed up the chemical attack with air strikes on local hospitals in the rebel-held region. “How many more children have to die before Russia cares?” Haley said, while holding up photographs of the victims.
