On Thursday, reports emerged that Hamas militants executed several individuals in the Gaza Strip, accusing them of being “collaborators” with Israel. The incident was shared through a video posted on a Telegram channel.
The footage, as described by the Times of Israel, shows over a dozen armed Hamas members, some of them in uniforms, shooting three men lying on the ground. The caption accompanying the video reads: “The moment of punishing the agents of the Zionist occupation who caused the killing of thousands of our Palestinian people in Gaza.”
The authenticity of the video has not been independently confirmed.
Hamas, which seized control of the Gaza Strip in a violent takeover in 2007, frequently claims to capture “Israeli spies” and often holds trials, with death sentences being handed down to those found guilty.
In September 2022, Hamas executed two Palestinian men for allegedly aiding Israel by providing intelligence that led to the deaths of two individuals.
Earlier in May 2023, a military tribunal in Gaza sentenced multiple Palestinian individuals to death by hanging or firing squad for supposedly sharing information with Israel.
In December 2023, Hamas announced the arrest of a group of Palestinians who were accused of “collaborating” with Israel by gathering intelligence in Gaza after Hamas’ deadly massacre on October 7.
Under normal circumstances, execution orders must be sanctioned by Palestinian Authority (PA) President Mahmoud Abbas, who is based in Ramallah and had previously imposed a halt on executions. However, Hamas no longer recognizes Abbas’ authority and has previously asserted that death sentences in Gaza can be carried out without his approval.
