The Hamas leadership wants a slow escalation in the confrontation with Israel prior to the April 9th Israeli elections, Israeli media reported on Sunday.

According to inside sources talking to Israel’s public broadcaster Kan, Hamas’ Shura Council, the secret executive institution within the movement, decided to gradually escalate the violence in Gaza in the next few weeks, while avoiding an all-out war.

The aim of the Islamic group would be to extract concessions from an embattled Netanyahu, as the prime minister tries to avoid a conflict at all costs for political reasons. According to Kan’s sources, the Hamas leadership is especially looking for Israel to deliver on large infrastructure projects, such as electricity and water desalination plants
