A front-page headline in the Hamevaser newspaper, which is associated with the Shlomei Emunim community, criticized the government’s handling of the Draft Law and the Likud party’s decision not to enact the Override Clause, as indicated by Netanyahu’s recent interview with the Wall Street Journal, Arutz Sheva reports.

Shlomei Emunim is a faction within the Agudas Yisrael group of the United Torah Judaism list.

The newspaper expressed concern over the potential violation of agreements regarding the regulation of yeshiva students’ status, stating, “There is fear in the Torah community due to the intention to disregard all agreements related to regulating the status of yeshiva students. Torah-observant Judaism protests against those who break agreements and compromise the fundamental principles.”

Referring to Netanyahu’s statements to the Wall Street Journal, Hamevaser highlighted, “In addition to the ongoing delays in progressing with the law to regulate the status of yeshiva students, the Likud party intends to breach its commitment to enact the Override Clause, which would prevent the Supreme Court from disrupting the status quo where ‘their Torah is their profession.'”

Currently, full-time yeshiva students are recognized as individuals whose profession is the study of Torah, granting them deferments from military service.

Minister Meir Porush of United Torah Judaism clarified on Thursday that his party would not accept any decision to set aside the Override Clause. He stated, “Two weeks ago, during a meeting with the Prime Minister in the presence of Ministers Levin, Amsalem, and the Cabinet Secretary, I warned against this inappropriate idea. In the name of United Torah Judaism, I demanded that the amendment to the Draft Law include the implementation of the three agreed-upon commitments: the Basic Law: Torah Study, the Override Clause, and the amendment to the Service and Security Law. Any other agreement is unacceptable to us.”
