Newly released data from the New York Police Department reveals a sharp rise in antisemitic incidents, with Jews accounting for 62% of all hate crimes reported across the city in October.
According to the police statistics, there were 47 hate crimes in total last month, 29 of which specifically targeted Jews. That means nearly two out of every three hate-related offenses in New York involved antisemitism — a rate significantly higher than usual.
Other categories of bias attacks were far less frequent. Police documented four anti-Asian incidents, one directed at Black individuals, two Islamophobic incidents, three motivated by hostility toward other religions, and eight targeting victims over their sexual orientation.
The numbers come just as New Yorkers head to the polls in a charged mayoral race that has deeply unsettled the Jewish community. Many are voicing growing concern over the expected victory of radical anti-Israel candidate Zohran Mamdani, fearing his rhetoric will embolden those who already harbor hatred toward Jews.
Law enforcement officials caution that these figures are preliminary and could shift as investigations progress — particularly in cases where initial evidence of bias might later be disproven.
Prosecutors face an uphill battle in securing hate-crime convictions, since the law requires demonstrating explicit bias as the motive, a standard that remains difficult to meet in court.
